It's the botanical ingredients of this balm which are the stars:
Calendula is an awesome skin healer, which promotes wound healing and skin cell regeneration whilst inhibiting inflammation. It's soothing, healing & tonifying to the skin. It's an antiseptic which keeps infection from occurring in injuries. It has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, and its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal activity helps to fight infections. It's used externally for inflammation of the skin and to treat bruises, burns, sores and skin ulcers, along with cuts & scrapes. Calendula has an antibacterial effect on staphylococcus aureus, a common bacteria which causes many skin infections including boils, impetigo & nappy rash.
Plantain's nickname is 'green bandage', referring to it's excellent use as a first aid remedy for cuts and wounds. Given the shape of the leaves it can be wrapped onto the skin like a bandage. Plantain is used topically to soothe irritation & infection, to treat skin problems such as eczema and acne and to relieve itchiness and stinging sensation from bug bites and stinging nettles. Plantain is gentle, toning, soothing & moisturising.
Chickweed has gentle skin healing properties. It's especially good for dry, itchy, inflamed skin conditions including eczema & psoriasis. I wilt the herb & infuse it in oil before straining & blending into my skincare. In a first aid situation you can mash up some fresh Chickweed and pack it (as a poultice) onto an insect bite, cut or rash, you’ll pretty quickly feel it’s cooling effects on your skin.
St Johns Wort Anti-inflammatory, analgesic (relieves pain), deep seated nervine effect, deadening nerve pain, eases arthritis pain, muscle pain & joint discomfort. Used to treat athletic injuries such as torn ligaments & muscles. Speeds the healing process of bruises by stimulating circulation of oxygenated blood to damaged cells.
Shea Butter is deeply moisturising, penetrating deep into the skin whilst also forming a protective barrier on the skin, keeping moisture in and dryness from the elements out. Shea butter is emollient, which means it can soften or soothe the skin.
Each balm is handcrafted from homegrown & wild harvested organic herbs which have been infused for a month in organic oils.
