Wild Everything Balm
A luscious & rich wild balm, with (almost) everything in it, good for (almost) everything. 100% wild.
Every Summer in the wild I found many thriving plants such as Self Heal, Yarrow, Plantain, St John's Wort, Manuka, Rose & Chamomile. These plants all hold amazing skin healing properties.
These plants skin healing properties can be applied to everything from soothing itchy bites & stings, to disinfecting & healing fresh wounds, slowing bloodflow, healing damaged skin including burns, calmed inflamed skin including sunburn, all whilst soothing & moisturising dry & delicate skin. They are literally the skin healing all stars.
Hence this 'Wild Everything' balm, which has pretty much everything in it, and that you can use for pretty much everything! I love these sorts of balm, especially when travelling in Summer. Whenever the kids or anyone has a this or that skin problem, you can turn to just one balm in your bag as the best remedy.
A little more about each of these herbs:
Yarrow aka Soldier’s woundwort, referring to it's use by the Greek Hero Achilles, who would use Yarrow to treat soldiers wounds on the battlefields. You don't need to be that hardcore to love Yarrow, it's one of my favorite foraged first aid ingredients, known to stem the flow of bleeding and speed the healing of wounds. Yarrow contains antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties making this the perfect addition to any skin moisturiser, especially if you're a bare hand gardener prone to cuts, scratches & dry skin!
Plantain's nickname is 'green bandage', referring to it's excellent use as a first aid remedy for cuts and wounds. Given the shape of the leaves it can be wrapped onto the skin like a bandage. Plantain is used topically to soothe irritation & infection, to treat skin problems such as eczema and acne and to relieve itchiness and stinging sensation from bug bites and stinging nettles. Plantain is gentle, toning, soothing & moisturising. Plantain has blood clotting agents and the natural allantoin promotes cell regeneration whilst the natural silica aids tissue healing.
Self Heal really stands out as a first aid & medicinal herb. It has anti bacterial, anti viral & astringent properties & stems the flow of blood. It’s most commononly been used throughout history to treat wounds and heal the skin. In a first aid situation you can make a poutice or a herbal infusion with leaves & flowers to stop bleeding, disinfect a wound, reduce swelling through tonifying & tightening tissues and speed the healing of wounds.
St Johns Wort has anti-inflammatory, analgesic (relieves pain), deep seated nervine effect, deadening nerve pain, eases arthritis pain, muscle pain & joint discomfort. Used to treat athletic injuries such as torn ligaments & muscles. Speeds the healing process of bruises by stimulating circulation of oxygenated blood to damaged cells, and also speed the healing of broken skin and burns.
Manuka is known to be anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral & anti-fungal. It also helps to combat skin infections and acne causing bacteria whilst improving the appearance of acne, dermatitis, blisters and sunburn.
Chamomile is used to treat sensitive or inflammed skin, especially skin prone to acne, eczema or psoriasis. It's gently calming & healing to delicate skin.
